Oct 17 -- Infrant Technologies Inc., a vendor of network-based storage for home and small business use, has announced the availability of its ReadyNAS NV+ , a NAS (network attached storage) device that can offer up to 3 Terabytes (TB) of storage in an ultra-compact form factor.

The ReadyNAS NV+ is the latest in the company’s ReadyNAS line, and is designed to meet the varied and demanding needs of consumers and small office/home office (SOHO) users for a reliable, failsafe way to store their data, the company said last week. ReadyNAS NV+ comes preinstalled with RAIDiator 3.0, which includes the most updates of any firmware upgrade for the ReadyNAS line, it added.

The ReadyNAS NV+ includes several major improvements over previous ReadyNAS designs, such as a quieter design, Infrant of Fremont, California said. The NV+ also has a new LCD (liquid crystal display) that displays instant status notifications in clear and concise language, making the NV+ easy to use, it added.

The ReadyNAS NV+ is positioned by Infrant as the perfect NAS for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and small office/home office (SOHO) environments, as it is easily scalable to 3 TB, based on current hard drive sizes. The NAS deploys Infrant's patent-pending X-RAID technology. The NV+ also employs four hot-swap trays, making it easy to replace or install a hard drive, even when the unit is powered on, the company said. As with all ReadyNAS devices, the NV+ is compatible with Microsoft Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X operating systems, it added.

The ReadyNAS NV+ is also suitable for home users, as it has Gigabit Ethernet and class-leading performance, making it one of the few home NAS devices that can support multiple high-definition (HD) content streams, Infrant said. The product also has UPnP (universal plug and play) support for a wide variety of digital media adapters, and embedded SlimServer open source software for use with Squeezebox and Transporter from Slim Devices Inc. in Mountain View, California.

The RAIDiator 3.0 firmware for the ReadyNAS appliances includes enhanced power-saving features such as disk spin-down and scheduled power on and off. The firmware also includes improvements for Macintosh users with Apple's Bonjour and improved AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) performance now standard, Infrant said.

The ReadyNAS NV+ comes bundled with a five-client license of EMC Corp.'s Retrospect Professional backup software, providing fast backups and smart restores for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, according to the company. The ReadyNAS NV+ family includes various SKUs (stock keeping units) to meet the wide range of storage needs from consumers and SMBs.
